Jim Black
General Manager, Baierl Toyota Ice Complex | Partner, Next Step Hockey
Jim Black is a lifelong Pittsburgher whose roots in the hockey community run deep. Having grown up playing the game in western Pennsylvania, Jim inherited a passion for the sport from his father, Frank Black, who helped grow hockey across the region in the 1970s. Frank’s contributions included founding the Western Pennsylvania Hockey Officials Association (WPHOA), introducing ice hockey to the Keystone State Games, and serving as Vice President on the national board of AHAUS (now USA Hockey) – a legacy Jim continues proudly today.
With over 35 years of coaching experience, Jim has dedicated his life to developing young players and expanding opportunities for girls’ hockey across the region. He has served as Hockey Director for the North Pittsburgh Wildcats and continues to mentor players through his work as Partner at Next Step Hockey. His leadership and steady presence behind the bench have helped shape countless players both on and off the ice.
As General Manager of the Baierl Toyota Ice Complex for more than a decade, Jim has supported countless community hockey initiatives, including those by The Malone Family Foundation. His continued engagement reflects a shared commitment to growing the sport and fostering opportunities that strengthen the hockey family throughout the Pittsburgh region.
