Our Pillars

Access to the Game

Identifying individuals, families, and organizations lacking access to funds, equipment, or facilities, thus prohibiting them from having the ability to enjoy the sport. Our goal is to make the game financially accessible for all who wish to play.

Military Families

Supporting veterans and first responders, their families, and those who are currently serving by working closely with organizations that help promote the wellness and funding of military family-focused initiatives. Our goal is to use hockey as a way to help heal and support the well-being and growth within those communities.

Wellness Through Sport

Promoting wellness through sport-specific education and activities that focus on nutrition, mental health, and the power of an active mind & body. Our goal is to help support hockey-specific programs that promote healthy lifestyles in sustainable ways.

Founder, Ryan “Bugsy” Malone:

Born in Pittsburgh to Greg and Diana Malone on December 1, 1979, Bugsy played in 647 National Hockey League games, as well as the 2010 Winter Olympics, before retiring. Passionate about giving back to the game that gave him so much, Bugsy founded The Malone Family Foundation. Alongside his family, their work will help bring the same joy to others that hockey has brought to them for nearly 50 years.

Our History

Pittsburgh Is Home to the Malone Family and has been for close to 50 years. Originally born in Chatham, New Brunswick, Greg Malone was drafted by the Penguins in 1976, and his son Ryan again in 1999, making him the first NHL player both born and trained locally to play for the team. Having spent five decades in the Pittsburgh area, their ties run deep in the community.

While hockey has always come naturally to the Malones, service to their community and country has also been core to the family’s mission and can be traced back to Ryan’s grandfather who served in the Korean War. Along with his service, Ryan’s cousin and uncle also served in the Army & Navy, respectively.

Greg still resides in Pittsburgh and maintains his activity within the hockey community. His involvement in the newly formed family foundation will allow him to grow his legacy of service, along with Ryan and the rest of the family’s vision for supporting the game they love and providing access to all who wish to play.
