On January 27, 2023, The Malone Family Foundation co-hosted the first-ever Battle Buddy Clinic in partnership with the Johnstown Generals Veteran hockey team and Johnstown Tomahawks Foundation at the iconic War Memorial Arena, the home of Slap Shot. Each youth hockey participant from the Johnstown Warriors was paired with a Veteran from the Johnstown Generals as their ‘battle buddy’ for the session. The match was meant to facilitate mentorship and support throughout the evening in alignment with the pillars of The Malone Family Foundation: Military and First Responder Families, Wellness, and Access to the Game.
Ryan Malone, Founder of The Malone Family Foundation, noted: “Our family is grateful for the opportunity to share our passion with the Johnstown community. The battle buddy ice session shows that people of all ages can enjoy the game of hockey in a fun environment. The camaraderie of lacing up a pair of skates and moving your body with a smile on your face is what it’s all about.”
Sean Mullen, Vice President and Operations Officer for the Johnstown Generals Veteran Ice Hockey program, added: “The Generals are honored and excited to continue to grow our relationship with The Malone Family Foundation, the Johnstown Tomahawks, and the Johnstown Warriors to serve the community and share the joy of ice hockey with as many different communities as we can. Bringing the greatest people and time-proven organizations together through the greatest game to heal spirits, bodies, and minds is nothing short of miraculous.”
